September 4, 1951- President Truman makes first transcontinental television broadcast. The broadcast was held in San Francisco and it was the first time a television broadcast was transmitted coast to coast. The speech was regarding Truman`s acceptance of treaty that officially ended America`s after-war WWII occupation of Japan. The broadcast was picked up by 87 stations in 47 cities, according to CBS. Since the end of the Second World War Japan had been occupied and under observance by America military under the Guidance of General Douglas MacArthur. Over 5 years later, the president considered the task of rebuilding Japan completely. Truman praised the people for going along with the plan and built a new, better and safer Japan.
September 30, 1952- This was the release date for the top-selling movie in 1952 "This Is Cinerama". Lowell Jackson Thomas was the narrator to this movie. "This Is Cinerama" was directed by Merian C. Cooper, and produced by Robert L. Benedick and the director Merian C. Cooper. The film starts off in traditional black and white and white as Lowell appears on-screen to discuss the evolution of motion pictures. At the end of the 12 minute narration Lowell speaks the words, "This is Cinerama", and the screen goes into full Cinerama aspect ratio and color. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards including- Best Music. In 2002, the Library of Congress inducted the film into the National Film Registry.
September 30- October 5, 1953- Through the course of those 5 days the playoffs for the World Series were held. The teams that participated were the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. During the first two games the Yankees were victorious. The next two the Dodgers came out on top with the next two games. In the end the Yankees won 4 games to 2. The Dodgers and the Yankees have met a total of 11 times at the World Series, more times than any other team in National and American Baseball Leagues. The broadcasters to this World Series, were Mel Allen and Vin Scully on NBC radio.
February 25, 1954- Egypt elected Gamal Abdel Nasser to be it`s premier that day. Gamal planned the overthrow of the British monarchy in 1952 and served as deputy prime minister. Nasser was born January 15, 1918 in Alexandria, Egypt. He died September 29,1970 in Cairo, Egypt. He was elected President of Egypt on June 23, 1956 and remained president till the day he died. Nasser is credited as being one of the most influential figure in the recent history of the Middle East.
April 18, 1955- Albert Einstein died from internal bleeding caused by the AAA (abdominal aortic aneurysm). Einstein refused surgery, and I quote, "I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly." At the age of 76 he died at Princeton Hospital in Princeton, New Jersey on Witherspoon Street. The pathologist at the hospital Thomas Stoltz Harvey removed Einstein`s brain without his family`s permission for the purpose of neuroscience. Einstein`s remains were scattered at an undisclosed location. Albert Einstein is credited with being the father of physics and having created the world`s most famous equation," E = mc2".
