July 1, 1966- Medicare begins for patients. Medicare has been providing healthcare for seniors since that day. They also serve younger people as well with disabilities, people with end stage renal failure, and persons with Lou Gehrig`s disease. In 2010, Medicare provided health insurance to 48M Americans. 40 million of those beings seniors, the other 8 million being the younger ones with disabilities, etc.
March 2, 1967- The 1967 or 9`th Annual Grammy Awards were held in Chicago, Los Angeles, Nashville, and New York. This Academy Awards is notable because it did not present the Grammy for Best New Artist, keep in mind the award has been given out since 1959. Record of The Year went to Frank Sinatra`s song, "Strangers in The Night" produced by Jimmy Bowen. Sinatra also won Album of the Year, for "A Man and His Music". The Beatles also won Song of the Year for, "Michelle" written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Other winners include David Houston, Neal Hefti (who composed the Batman theme song), Duke Ellington, Ray Charles, etc.
September 25, 1968- Willard Christopher "Will" Smith Jr. was born 9/25/1968. Will Smith was born and raised in West Philadelphia, he has also lived in Germantown in Northwest Philadelphia. He was born to Caroline and Willard Christopher Smith, Jr. His mother Caroline was a school administrator that worked for the Philadelphia Board of Education. His father Willard was a refrigeration engineer. His parents separated when he was 13, but did not truly separate till 2000.
March 10, 1969- James Earl Ray confesses to assassinating Dr. King. Ray fled to Toronto after the murder, where he hid for a month. He acquired a Canadian passport under the false name Ramon George Sneyd. On June 8, 1968 a little more than 2 months after King`s death , Ray was captured at London`s Heathrow Airport while trying to leave the UK on the false passport. At check-in the ticket agent noticed the name on his passport, Sneyd was on a Royal Canadian Mounted Watchlist. He confessed and was sentenced to 99 years in jail. He died in prison April 23, 1998.
May 30, 1970- The 1970 Ancash Earthquake or Great Peruvian Earthquake was an undersea earthquake. The earthquake was combined with a landslide, it was the worst catastrophic natural disaster in record history of Peru. Due to the large amount of snow and ice in the landslide it is estimated that over 200,000 fatalities and is said to be the world`s deadliest avalanche. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.9 or 8.0 on the Richter scale. No significant tsunami was reported as a side-affect. According to Time Magazine it is ranked #10 on "Top 10 Deadliest Earthquakes of All Time".
